I love activities that I do every year at the same time, and in time, these actions become muscle memory... as easy as breathing...

The essential paradigm shift is that GOOD HEALTH is something we create and nourish proactively, with regular attention...much like growing a garden. It's all about building up a foundation of practices that water and nourish and build the tissues in our body and our soul/ energy ~ it's about relearning, going from the inside out rather than the outside in... being stuck in survival mode does nothing but make us SICK - we may be the sickest culture that ever lived...
I think about it all the time ~ how can we be well? How can we heal? Because even when we eat well, sleep, hydrate and exercise we poison ourselves with EMFS constantly, heavy metals in the sky, other peoples pharmaceuticals in our water... ? Those of us who are sensitive and do everything to be well but somehow we're still sick- it's incredibly frustrating!
I've been musing about writing a novel and also thinking about the idea of watching the story of myself from the outside, what would the character need to do next in order to be transformed? On this same note, if we were viewing the whole story of humanity from the outside, what would we need to do next to liberate ourselves?🦅

🍵THE POWER OF HERBAL TEA!!! 🍵

Such a savior during seasonal transitions, for tonifying and nourishing the tissues of the body as well as helping to warm and moisten when the body is having a harder time maintaining its temperatures and overall homeostasis...

In case you don't know, you always want to steep your tea COVERED to prevent the volatile oils (like aromatic terpenes) from escaping with the steam into the air... these contain much of the medicinal benefits, particularly with nervine teas- these compounds are antispasmodic to all the smooth muscles of the body/ the muscles surrounding all our major organs- GI, heart, lungs...

In the realm of cocktails and elixirs, you can use a warm tea base mixed 1:1 with raw honey to make a "honey tea syrup" (upgraded simple syrup)

For those participating in Dry January, I'd love to share this herbal tonic recipe from my recently released book ✨Botanical Barcraft ✨where half the seasonally inspired recipes are (more than) "mocktails."

I have been drinking different variations of grapefruit+bubbles+ nervine tinctures all week, which inspired me to shake this recipe with you! The one I'm drinking today (not in the book, but just an aside) is fresh grapefruit juice with @fevertreemixers tonic water Rose elixir and Saint John's wort tincture ... trying to help stave off seasonal depression by keeping the energies of the body moving!🌞

A few of the recipes in the book include herbal tinctures from well known companies (because not everyone wants to make their own tinctures)... such as in this 'Free the Qi' recipe which includes their companies beautifully formulated Happiness Tonic ✨

Grapefruit is one of my favorite nonalcoholic mixers because the sour taste engages the liver! Especially useful if you are craving a cocktail.

White Pine & Balsam Fir Sea Salt for a festive margarita🎄🌟

Fresh evergreen needles +sea salt whizzed up in a food processor! Easy peasy!

(The only poisonous evergreen tree are species the Yew family, Taxaceae ). They are VERY poisonous- they have dark green, soft needles and red berries/ arils as well as groovy bark.

If you need help identifying plants or trees, use a dichotomous key such as the online resource gobotany.org- I always try to get 2 or three positive confirmations of a species from different sources.

If you are in Maine- the Book- Forest Trees of Maine is an excellent resource!

When crafting drinks, I like to take the long, slow, & sensory full way that involves slow sourcing from local farms or growing garnishes in my own garden. I like to reflect the full story of the moment and the experience that's being created for those imbibing... creating memories with taste. Make your own bitters at home!

Fill a pint sized mason jar 2/3 full with roughly two parts each chopped fresh Dandelion root and Angelica root, then about 1 part each Burdock root, fresh Ginger, Cinnamon chips or 1 stick, dried Orange peel, Cardamom pods, and then about a half part Juniper berries and a sprig or two of Rosemary and dried Mugwort.

Bitters are very forgiving and the measurements don't have to be exact- sometimes I record recipes in "parts," and other times I weigh everything out.

This blend of botanicals is spicy and festive for the holidays but if you don't want to venture out for all of these ingredients, you can just use some of them! An orange peel and rosemary bitter with a few cloves sprinkled in is delightful!

Use an over proof spirit to ensure full extraction of all your beautiful aromatic compounds. Sometimes I use full strength @culinarysolvent and "proof down " later and sometimes I mix it with water ahead so is about 75% alcohol.

After 2-4 weeks, use a fine mesh strainer and a small funnel and small glass measuring cup to transfer into a tincture or dasher bottle.

In the world of cocktail craft, bitters are used for flavoring and enhancing ~ while in the realm of herbal medicine, we know the virtues of their many health benefits- including energetic grounding, tonifying the liver, enhancing digestion, & regulating blood sugar... definitely a great choice for this upcoming holiday season of indulgence! Bitters also make cute holiday 🎁 gifts!!

I like to lose myself as frequently as possible, yielding to the interconnected soul of all things-

Sometimes I do it fast, like I'm literally running away from myself (trail running ) becoming the path and the wind...

And sometimes I do it a little more slowly like when I'm reading books-

For years I could not read fiction- I found it detestable being inside other peoples heads, I felt like it somehow ruined my imagination rather than nurturing it. All those years I just read text books and how-to reference types of things.

This past Summer and now I've been reading EVERYTHING I can get my hands on, in pursuit of becoming a better writer. I've been replacing cocktail hour with reading... 😉

The consequence is I feel like a kid again- reading was my first love of escapism. I won reading contests as a kid- I'm a speed reader!! I would read 10 novels a week.

There's something beautiful about reclaiming things. There's something beautiful about being an observer and a passenger which the reader is... yielding to the kaleidoscope of truths, relinquishing control and experiencing a different perspective. I think this is medicine we could all take a little sip of.

Little known fact: I used to write poetry A LOT and I printed a single copy of a poetry anthology called "Heart of a Vagabond" - the last slide is from that 🖤

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

I can't even begin to express how delightful and delish this drink is that I crafted for @themillionairemother and the beautiful dynamic women held by the grandmother tree and the land at Windhambrae

First I infused a 50/50 base of Mezcal and tequila with sacred cacao lovingly processed by a small women's coop in Guatemala @heartslovecacao

To make the drink I muddled Fall raspberries @mcdougal.orchards added agave, a dash of Cointreau, organic beet juice, Lime juice and tinctures for further HEART EXPANSION : Wild rose elixir, Reishi Mushroom (made by me!) and Hawthorn tincture @herbpharm
I shook the mixture and poured into a glass rimmed with spicy salt (pink Himalayan mixed with smoked paprika and cayenne)

🌲❤️🐾Tomorrow will be a year since the love of my life, my dog, Jack Pine passed... I dedicated my book to him because I wrote the majority of it while I was grieving...

I had never felt lonely in my life until after he passed. As someone who considers quiet places in nature home, a dog is really the best friend you could ever have. It's like being siddhartha ( watching the river flow by) but with a snuggly guardian angel by your side.

As someone quite cerebral, as many of us are... dogs teach us to be present and in our body. God, I wish I could be as happy as a dog, sometimes. This four legged being taught me how to use my heart and to know what LOVE is

Dogs are mirrors of our emotions and nervous systems and much like me, Jack Pine was wild, intense, fast, athletic, expressive and rebellious. His favorite words were "adventure" and "friends..."

he died the night before his ninth birthday so Sunday on what would have been his birthday I'm going to go for a hike in his honor, at one of our favorite spots.

The experience of this loss was a huge gateway for me (the book) but also, I think, into adulthood. He was my guardian and gatekeeper from youth to maturity.

Tomorrow I'm going to open up the first copy of my book that I just received in the mail, which is why I'm sharing all of this, the meaning and the magical timing...

Making infused sugars and salts using a food processor is one of my favorite ways to preserve botanical color and aromatic flavor for cocktails 💚

This sugar will have Fall raspberries dipped in it for a cocktail garnish for the bride's signature (non-alcoholic!) drink tomorrow.

Often associated with peak Summer, Basil is actually a wonderfully balancing herb for the Autumn, being warming and pungent in nature and therefore promoting the circulation of blood as well as dispersing tension (pungent aromatic) and relaxing the body which further promotes good circulation!

In TCM 5-Element Theory each season has a taste and Fall is associated with spicy or pungent foods. Eating these flavors has balancing effects within each season as it affects your body. Focusing on the tastes of the season before is also helpful for season transitions!!

In addition to helping with circulation, like many warming aromatic pungents, Basil is antimicrobial, antispasmodic (improves breathing or relieve headaches), carminative (improves digestion), and diaphoretic..

The common Basil we eat has even been studied for its anti-cancer effects as well as having a positive therapeutic influence in cases of anxiety and depression. It's GABA-ergic which means its constituents have an effect on the GABA receptors which are a big part of the signaling for R&R in our nervous system. This effect on GABA makes it a potential therapeutic agent in epilepsy...Our sweet little Basil has also been studied as a neuroprotective agent in the face of chronic stress and also to mitigate memory loss (neurodegenerative conditions).

I like to enjoy my free time learning new things, and taking classes or reading books that make me better at whatever it is that I do~ really excited to have just signed up for a sommelier class with @wsetglobal @commonwealthwineschool that begins in a couple of weeks, that will no doubt make me a better bartender!

and I will be attending @americanherbalistsguild professional herbalist conference this Fall too! In preparation for beginning to see clients again for health consultations again.

I like to enjoy my free time learning new things, and taking classes or reading books that make me better at whatever it is that I do~ really excited to have just signed up for a sommelier class with @wsetglobal @commonwealthwineschool that begins in a couple of weeks, that will no doubt make me a better bartender!

and I will be attending @americanherbalistsguild professional herbalist conference this Fall too! In preparation for beginning to see clients again for health consultations again.

I'm not really a forager so much as recognize myself as simply being part of nature and place. The forest has always felt like home to me.

Have you ever wanted to know more about how spirits are made? My favorite chapter to write in my cocktail book Botanical Barcraft is Chapter 5 "Distilling Place"where I got to do a little investigative journalism and dig deeper into the spirit behind craft liquor (& hydrosol) brands. As a lifetime gardener and craft bartender of 10+ years who regularly teaches cocktail classes, I am consistently sharing and representing distilleries that make a positive impact on agriculture. This week, I've been contemplating
✨ECOLOGICAL BALANCE ✨

Perceiving the whole dynamic picture and maintaining healthy soil as well as the 'terrain' in the body by making the more thoughtful (sometimes less convenient) choice.
Pausing to see the interplay of the elements is a big part of organic gardening- healthy plants are more apt to be able to withstand the pressure of pests and disease- the same goes with human bodies! Are you getting enough nourishment? Sickness seems to create more sickness and it can be even harder to be healthy when we inhabit environments that are also sick- waters laced with pesticides, air with metals...it makes the systems weaker, like pulling on the strings of a web.
Having the discipline (& resources) to make the healthiest, mindful choices is a constant labor of life affirmation and love. But it can be hard and nuanced when faced with so much adversity, and so many strings unattached...it's no wonder people want to pop a pill!

Anyway, this is what an herbalist does- sees the whole picture with you, holding your hand, finding your best plant and lifestyle allies to become the strongest healthiest you. 🍵🌿

Distillation of the absolute seemingly complex to something simple, digestible ..like a good drink.

Is what you are the same as the work that you do, the role that you embody? What is coming next? What are you visualizing in the act of creation?
Are you courageous enough to take "heart steps" asks a letter written in cursive from a plant loving penpal on the opposite side of the wheel...

Must we always ACT! How actors become their personas, caricatures of themselves...such a contrived performance.
Big showy flowers have shallow roots and are destined to fall over...
What about the balance of ☯️ yin and yang? We live in a world where everyone is screaming, god knows what! desperately trying to be heard ... but no one is LISTENING.
I must say that truly seeing and hearing the world is not for the faint of heart but it where the heart of the healer and the mystic lives.... integrating polarities, sensing the unseen, showing up to be what the moment needs.

Are you matching the frequency of the culture or are you setting your own pace? Dare to be different. Personally, I care to be a resource an asset for my family, friends, & community but sometimes it's hard to know HOW to best execute...What do people need? It's back to the drawing board- but don't rush the process- enjoy the blank page. 🎨👩‍🎨✨
